Introduction
Large Mining Company in development phase is seeking to appoint an experienced Chief Surveyor who will report directly to the Assistant General Manager and will serve as a member of the Mine & Operations Team. Position will be on a Fixed-Term 6 month contract and will be based at our Mine Site situated in the Greater Tubatse area, within the Sekhukhune District Municipality, in Limpopo Province.
Job description

Legal Compliance:

  • Legal appointment in terms of section 17.2 of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) with accountability for mining surveying compliance.
  • Ensure all survey work performed on the mine adheres to legal requirements and departmental regulations.
  • Provide support in the shaft box cut excavation, issue accurate survey planning notes, maintain appropriate survey measurements, ensure slope/gradients are in accordance with design specifications.
  • Ensure that monthly risk assessments are conducted to pro-actively identify risks to shaft operations using risk matrix format.
  • Compile and maintain legally compliant mine plans in alignment with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
  • Oversee compliance with safety, health, and environmental standards, promoting adherence across all surveying operations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor survey standards, guidelines, and governance processes to ensure legal compliance and operational excellence.

Gathering:

  • Provide accurate survey data resources and information for mining processes.
  • Capture and maintain thorough data within established systems.
  • Conduct research and document best practice survey and sampling standards.
  • Coordinate and implement surveying best practices alongside technology to optimise value and minimise risk.
  • Administer efficient information recording systems for survey data.
  • Perform monthly production measurements and ensure accuracy.
  • Compile monthly safety reports that comply with safety standards and guidelines.
  • Conduct underground excavation measurements and survey waste dumps.
  • Identify, report, and mitigate work-related risks and hazards.
  • Develop and implement controls to prevent injuries and fatalities across the mining operation.

Analysing:

  • Review reports and outputs for accuracy prior to submission.
  • Collect, analyse, and report survey data effectively.
  • Continuously research for optimised data capturing and processing, particularly in a mechanised mining environment.
  • Ensure effective implementation of operational plans.
  • Analyse the latest design plans and assess survey-related attributes in the environment.
  • Refine information, collate, and submit comprehensive reports, including running data exception reports and corrective action tracking.
  • Compile monthly, quarterly, and annual reports capturing key statistics and analytics.

Communication:

  • Report, reconcile, and declare figures transparently.
  • Prepare relevant documentation and reports for stakeholders.
  • Provide updated survey information for plan modifications.
  • Communicate and issue survey instructions reflecting the latest approved designs to all relevant parties.
  • Foster effective departmental communication to create a collaborative working environment.

Other Functions:

  • Optimise operational processes and address conflicts in supply chain management.
  • Plan, direct, and oversee Quality Management adherence within the survey function.
  • Continuous optimisation of systems and processes to meet development efficiency goals.
  • Apply surveying expertise to enhance mine operations for sustainable value realisation.
  • Identify environmental and social opportunities related to surveying across the company.

Teamwork:

  • Encourage open communication within teams using verbal and electronic methods.
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines and functions, ensuring clarity in teamwork expectations.
  • Promote a high standard of housekeeping and administrative compliance.
  • Manage relationships with business units and external stakeholders to align training and development needs.
  • Lead recruitment, development, and performance management for the surveying team.

People Management:

  • Uphold the Company’s 'Code of Conduct' and instil a culture of compliance within the team.
  • Advise management on necessary training initiatives for employees.
  • Create a high-performance team while promoting a positive employee relations environment.
  • Conduct risk assessments and communicate potential hazards with employees.
  • Manage labour stability and support HDSA/female targets for the department.

Performance Management:

  • Monitor and manage safety activities and compliance with workplace safety regulations.
  • Develop employee schedules, assigning responsibilities and ensuring completion.
  • Identify non-conformances and implement corrective actions to meet departmental targets.
  • Oversee budgeting and resource utilisation to prevent material waste.

Strategic and Tactical Planning:

  • Assist in compiling strategic plans in alignment with business objectives.
  • Ensure safety precautions are taken before tasks and monitor the work environment for compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Manage environmental compliance and non-conformance issues reporting.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication systems between various teams and departments.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, coordinate, and control survey functions and resources to maximise ore extraction.
  • Collaborate with departmental leadership for trend analysis and risk management through comprehensive data management.
  • Conduct audits and reviews of survey standards and practices ensuring alignment with legislative requirements.
  • Any other responsibility that can be reasonably expected in this role / function.

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying / Mineral Resources Management or similar field.
  • Mine Survey Certificate of Competency (MSCC).
  • Member of IMSSA (Institute of Mine Surveyors of South Africa) and/or SAGC (South African Geomatics Council).
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience as Mine Surveyor in the Mining Industry.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in management.
  • Experience in green fields projects / mine development.
  • Experience in open pit excavation advantageous.

Language Requirements:

  • English: Fully Proficient.
  • Sepedi: Verbally Proficient advantageous.
  • Fanakalo: Verbally Proficient advantageous.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Surveyor System skills e.g., CAD, JDE, Isometrix, Qlikview, Micro Station, Oracle, and Leica Geo Office etc.
  • Understanding of surveying methods and technologies relevant to mining operations.
  • Familiarity with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant mining regulations.
  • Skills in data acquisition, database management, and statistical analysis.
  • Able to analyse data, identify discrepancies, and implement corrective actions.
  • Skill in monitoring survey data trends to inform operational decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing multiple projects and resources.
  • Able to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Able to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Additional Requirements:

  • Medically fit to work on an underground mine.
