Introduction
Large Mining Company in development phase is seeking to appoint an experienced Legal Officer who will report directly to the Head of Legal and will serve as a member of the Legal Team. Position will be based at our Mine Site situated in the Greater Tubatse area, within the Sekhukhune District Municipality, in Limpopo Province.
Job description

Legal Support & Advice:

  • Provide accurate and timely legal guidance across operational areas to support informed decision-making and ensure compliance.
  • Interpret legal documents, contracts, and regulatory requirements, advising on potential legal implications.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments relevant to the mining sector and advise accordingly.
  • Support the management of legal risks by identifying potential issues and recommending mitigation strategies.

Contract and Document Management:

  • Draft, review, and manage legal agreements, policies, and internal procedures.
  • Coordinate contract negotiations, amendments, and finalisations with internal stakeholders and external parties.
  • Maintain comprehensive and organised records of legal documents, correspondence, and compliance registers.
  • Facilitate the proper closure and archiving of legal documents in line with company procedures.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Assist in implementing compliance frameworks aligned with mining, environmental, and health & safety laws.
  • Conduct regular compliance assessments and support remedial actions for non-conformance.
  • Monitor and report on compliance issues, advising management on corrective steps.

People & Stakeholder Management:

  • Promote adherence to the ‘Code of Conduct’ and support initiatives that foster a culture of integrity.
  • Assist management in developing training programs to enhance legal awareness.
  • Contribute to creating a high-performing, positive, and ethical work environment.
  • Manage relationships with internal departments, external legal counsel, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to facilitate effective communication.

Labour & Employee Relations:

  • Support efforts to achieve employment equity targets, including HDSA and gender representation.
  • Promote discipline and professionalism, ensuring safety protocols are actively enforced.
  • Assist in managing labour stability through positive engagement and stakeholder relationships.

Operations & Performance Management:

  • Participate in routine safety activities and training, ensuring a compliant work environment.
  • Manage workload priorities, adapt to organisational changes, and, where applicable, oversee employee schedules and responsibilities.
  • Identify deviations or non-conformances, implementing corrective actions and tracking department performance against targets.
  • Participate, support and, where applicable oversee, overtime, standby, and shift work, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation (e.g., BCEA).

Resource & Budget Utilisation:

  • Work within allocated budgets, optimising resource utilisation, including personnel, equipment, and materials.
  • Support cost-saving initiatives and waste reduction efforts.

Strategic & Policy Development:

  • Assist in developing and refining the organisation’s legal and compliance strategies.
  • Ensure all activities are aligned with company policies and applicable legislation.
  • Escalate non-compliance issues promptly for resolution.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Establish effective communication channels across teams to promote transparency.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with government, industry partners, and other stakeholders.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Uphold safety, health, and environmental standards across all activities.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably required to enhance the legal function or organisational objectives.

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:

  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent.
  • Admission as an attorney advantageous.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience as a Legal Officer or similar in the Mining Industry.
  • Experience in drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, and mining-related legal documentation.
  • Experience in mine site regulatory compliance, disputes, and litigation advantageous.

Language Requirements:

  • English: Fully Proficient.
  • Sepedi: Verbally Proficient advantageous.
  • Fanakalo: Verbally Proficient advantageous.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Strong knowledge of South African law, including contract law, corporate law, employment law, commercial law, regulatory compliance, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and legal terminology.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements (e.g., FICA, POPIA, PAIA, etc).
  • Strong knowledge of with mining industry regulations, including health and safety standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex contract terms and negotiate agreements.
  • Excellent Administration Skills.
  • Attention to detail and able to maintain accurate and organised records and documentation.
  • Strong organisational skills, time-management, and ability to multitask.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Able to handle confidential and sensitive information ethically with integrity and discretion.
